Study Title: MSc in Computer Engineering from the University of Pisa, 2010 (summa cum laude)

Full Story:  I majored in Computer Engineering more out of passion rather than for the sake of getting a job afterwards. Nevertheless, the number of jobs that I was offered after majoring (and after getting my BSc as well) was impressive. Since the start of my university program, my professional goal has always been to work for the game industry, because I like both computer games and the technology challenges that they pose. The Computer Engineering program gives you a solid basis on various aspects of computer systems. I chose it because I wanted to understand and explore computer systems in all their facets (computer networks, industrial informatics, databases, control theory, software engineering, etc.).
I did my MSc thesis at the PERCRO lab of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, and I worked there on Virtual Reality for six more months. In July 2011 I got a job as a software engineer at Havok, Dublin. Havok is the world leader in engines for computer games, a fame earned with the Havok Physics engine for real-time simulation of virtual objects (used within Skyrim, Assassin Creed, etc.). I take care of the infrastructure of our products on several platforms (PC, Xbox, PS3, etc.). My work is appreciated within Havok, and I am completely satisfied with my job.
In my everyday work I only use a subset of what I learned during the Computer Engineering program: programming skills are essential in my case, including concurrent and distributed programming; networking concepts are useful, as are computer architecture fundamentals. The expertise acquired while majoring on these subjects is a solid basis that one can easily extend in the necessary directions. I sometimes marvel at how narrowband the preparation of some of my colleagues is by comparison, limited as it is to one specific field of interest.
